Thirty-five million years ago, our ancestors, the great apes of the Miocene era, flourished in Earth's warm forests. But as landscapes shifted and climates changed, their habitat was destroyed and grew smaller, isolating them into small groups.

Children will paint a map of this changing landscape as they learn how our ancestors adapted and survived through Earth's many challenges.
Some hominids copied the strengths they observed in other animals, using sticks like the claws of lions to dig and axes and spears to hunt their prey. Children will practice creating simple tools out of materials found in nature, gaining an appreciation for the challenges our ancestors faced as much as the creativity they had.
Tragically, the tectonic rifts, multiple ice ages, and massive eruption of Mount Toba brought many early hominids to extinction.

But through the eons, we exhibited resilience. Homo Erectus adapted by using tools and consuming meat, and Neanderthals evolved with wide noses to help them warm air in their nasal cavities during a fiece ice age.
In the end, only we, Homo Sapiens, persisted. Our families and communities diversified, and in the process, we created many beautiful things.

As their final project in this Great Story, children will build a miniature of either Stone Henge or Machu Picchu as they learn about the sophisticated cosmology and societal structures of their ancestors.
